Veggie Donors

GardenWorks sends out a very special "Thank you!" to our generous veggie donors - Dan Hopkins, Donna Robbins, and Sweet Home Organics! Thanks to your generosity, we can fill our community garden space at Village Greens Park. The produce grown here will be donated to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry.

Thank you to the Glen Ellyn Park District for donating to us the use of this space, and thank you to all of the volunteers who signed up to care for it thoughout the summer. We are amazed and humbled by your generosity and dedication to the elimination of hunger in DuPage County.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

A Million Thank You’s
A special thank you to all who came out to our volunteer orientation on April 11. It was thrilling to have such a large turnout, and we are truly amazed and humbled by your interest in GardenWorks and the cause of reducing hunger in our community.

Volunteer Opportunities
While we have matched up most of our garden recipients with volunteers to build their gardens and coaches to give advice throughout the season, we do have a few more volunteer openings. If you are interested in any of these spots for garden builds, email us.
  • 1 garden builder for a balcony/container garden for a family in Wheaton on Saturday, May 25 at 1pm
  • 1 garden coach for a family with a balcony/container garden in Wheaton
  • 1 garden planter (no building) for a family in Glendale Heights on Sunday, May 26 at 2:30 (this family also needs a coach, and we would prefer if the planter and the coach were the same person)

Adopt Our Garden
We are looking for a few more volunteers to adopt our 30x30 plot at the Village Green Community Garden in Glen Ellyn for a week this summer. During your assigned week, you'll stop by the garden once or twice, yank any weeds you see, and water if it hasn’t rained in a few days. This is a great way to help the cause, since all of the vegetables produced will be delivered to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry.

Openings:
  • Week of August 18
  • Week of August 25
Special thanks to our friends at the Glen Ellyn Park District who reached out to us about using this space at no charge.

Teachers Wanted
We are also looking for volunteer class instructors to teach a 30-45 minute class about vegetable gardening, cooking with homegrown vegetables, really anything veggie garden related. You pick the topic, date, and time. The class will be taught outdoors at our 30x30 Village Green Community Garden plot. Email us for more information.

A Home for Your Extra Seedlings
Do you grow your vegetable plants from seed? If you do, and you have extras after you’ve filled your garden, please keep GardenWorks in mind! Our Village Green Garden plot is BIG, so we have lots of room to place them. All produce from these plots will be donated to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry.

April Wish List
Below are a few items that we would like to provide our garden recipients to help ensure their success as new gardeners:
  •  Tomato cages
  • Watering cans
  • Self-watering planters for balcony gardens
Thank you for your interest in GardenWorks! We hope to meet you at a volunteer event this spring!

I Can Grow Vegetables! A Coloring and Activity Book

Tending to a vegetable garden is a great way to teach kids how plants grow and where food comes from. And we are convinced that kids will be more adventurous with new foods at the dinner table if they had a part in growing the food. Even though we can't get kids out into the garden just yet (at least not here in Chicago), we can start teaching them to grow food.

I Can Grow Vegetables! is a coloring and activity book created to teach kids about plants and how they grow. Ten illustrations and five activities are included in this 18 page, 8.5"x11" book. It will be provided to all of the children whose families receive gardens this year from GardenWorks, and now your kids can enjoy it too! Just use the link below to order I Can Grow Vegetables! for $1.99 using PayPal, and a PDF copy will be sent to your email inbox. You can then print it out for the kid in your life, and foster a lifelong love of gardening while helping GardenWorks do the same for kids in need.

Special Advertising Opportunity!

We are looking for a business or an individual to sponsor the printing of this coloring book for our garden recipients, and also to sell as a GardenWorks fundraiser at area events. For a donation of $400, we will place a half-page advertisement on the back cover. Contact us for more information on this special advertising opportunity!

36 hours left in 2013 fundraising campaign!

There is only 36 hours left in our GardenWorks 2013 fundraising campaign. That means you only have 36 hours to become one of our founding supporters and get some great GardenWorks perks!

Yes, with your help, we have reached our goal of $2000. We WILL build ten gardens for ten new families this May, and refresh the gardens we built last year. But we are not stopping there! In these last few hours, we are trying to reach $2500 to build two more gardens, and to provide for some education and outreach.

You still have a chance to be part of a grassroots effort to help families in need grow their own food. Visit our indiegogo fundraising page, watch the video, and choose to make a difference!

We did it!

Thanks to the help of our amazing founding supporters, we have met our 2013 fundraising goal! We are thrilled to be able to build ten gardens to ten families, supplying them with a raised bed garden, soil, compost, plants, seeds, and garden tools. We will also refresh our gardens from last year with fresh compost, plants, and seeds. All of our families will receive garden coaching throughout the season to help ensure a bountiful harvest. And we could not do this without your help. Thank you!!!

Our indiegogo campaign is still live for another 11 days, so we are trying to raise another $500 to provide instructional gardening books to our families, do some project outreach, and possibly build another two gardens. If you have not had a chance to donate, there is still time to do so, and get great GardenWorks perks!
